Original 1975 Norton MKIII 850 Commando 4-SPEED LEFT-SHIFT GEARBOX, with NEUTRAL INDICATOR SWITCH & 20-TOOTH SPROCKET, in
GOOD
condition
. Came from a bike was crashed and parted out many years ago by the previous owner, stored for at least 20 years before it found its way to me.
Gearbox number
331672
stamped on top of main shell.
As far as I can tell it has never been opened up, other than the rust on some of the ferrous bits and oxidation staining on the aluminum, it appears to be in
GOOD
to
VERY GOOD
condition.
Main case and inner cover are both in great shape -
NO
cracks,
NO
nasty gouges,
NO
weld repairs (main case has small wear mark on the back), both have remnants of the factory silver paint, main case mounting holes are both perfectly round,
NOT
worn or ovalled. Outer cover needs polishing and has a 1/2 gouge that can be sanded out, otherwise
VERY GOOD
,
NO
cracks, heavy scratches or gouges, will polish up like new.
Mainshaft turns freely & smoothly with
ZERO
lateral movement, however the sprocket only wants to turn through 30 degrees or so, feels like the sleeve gear bearing is dry and probably has some rust - not a major deal since I would normally replace all the bearings In a box like this as a matter of course. Good splines & threads on mainshaft, 20-tooth sprocket shows very minimal wear. Light wear on kickstart shaft, splines are still very much serviceable, left-shift selector shaft has some rust, will need a good cleanup, shift selector machanism works fine, all four gears & neutral can be selected. Neutral indicator switch & wiring included along with original special top mounting bolt, bottom bolt appears to be a "hardware store" replacement.
Open it up for inspection, replace all the bearings as mentioned (especially the layshaft bearing!), clean the cases and polish the outer cover, put it back together with new gaskets & fresh oil and it will be
GOOD to GO for your MKIII 850 NORTON COMMANDO
, or any other vintage custom, special or race bike that might need a late model lefthand-shifting AMC transmission - Don't miss this one!
