Description
Original BSA BB CB DB DBD GOLD STAR or BB34A ALLOY CLIPPER SC.T 4-SPEED NEEDLE ROLLER GEARBOX with FACTORY SCRAMBLES GEAR RATIOS, in
VERY GOOD
condition
. Nearly complete Gold Star or Alloy Clipper SCRAMBLES RATIO 4-speed needle roller box, has typical wear around the edges of the mainshaft clutch keyway (WILL still hold the key in place no problem), normal dings & scratches on the outer cover but otherwise
ALL
parts appear to be in
VERY GOOD
to
EXCELLENT
condition,
NO
cracks or weld repairs in the aluminum main shell, inner cover or outer cover. Functionally excellent - tested with a spare gearshift pedal prior to disassembly, everything works as it should, clean shifts up the gears, selects neutral properly, mainshaft shows
NO
up-and-down or side-to-side play at all. The oil that came out was clean, clear & golden,
NO
water, and the gears are in
EXCELLENT
condition - as good a used cluster as I have ever come across,
NO
chipped teeth and
NO
wear marks on the case-hardened load-bearing surfaces of the gears that are visible. Still, I decided to strip it all the way down to inspect and photograph all of the internals, to make 100% certain you know what you are bidding on! Here is what I found:
The main
gearbox shell
is intact and in great shape,
NO
cracks,
NO
weld repairs, mainshaft roller bearing & layshaft needle roller bearing should both be replaced due to age, both gearbox mounting holes nice & round,
NOT
worn or ovalled, camplate & plunger assembly included (in the lower position for normal 1-up, 3-down shift pattern), along with blanking plug in the top plunger hole and all 4 inner/outer cover mounting studs, all straight with good threads. Shell has part number 42-3005 cast-in upside down on the front, inner cover is in
great shape
,
has the factory "
SC .T
" stamping which of course indicates that this is a needle-roller scrambles ratio gearbox,
casting intact with
NO
cracks or weld repairs, kickstart stop is rock-solid (not beaten to death and loose in the cover as you often see), overall
EXCELLENT
, part number 67-3345 cast-in on the back with needle-roller cover part number 42-3084 stamped in above. Again the mainshaft ball bearing and Torrington needle roller both should be replaced as a matter of course, shift quadrant & steel gearshift & kickstart bushings look good. Outer gearbox cover also intact and in
FAIR
condition, will clean up nicely with careful sanding & polishing, NO nasty defects, complete with kickstart shaft (typical wear), quadrant (good teeth) & spring, gearshift shaft (good splines) & selector mechanism, 11-tooth speedometer drive worm gear assembly and clutch arm (arm shows slightly bent, has 1mm lateral movement.
Now we'll take a close look at the 4-speed SCRAMBLES SC.T needle-roller gear cluster:
Mainshaft 67-3315
is straight, good threads on both ends, clutch taper has some light staining, key slot has the usual chipping around the edges (will still hold the key securely as long as the clutch nut is properly torqued), sleeve gear bush journals look good, normal wear polishing,
NO
scoring, factory spiral oilways, good splines for sliding gears.
ALL
the
GEARS
are in
EXCELLENT
condition!
25-tooth 4th gear
or
sleeve gear 42-3088
looks
GREAT
condition,
NO
chipped or broken teeth,
NO
pitting, case-hardened surfaces of the teeth have nice polished finish, very light wear on engaging dogs for 2nd gear, good splines, good threads for sprocket nut, mainshaft bushings in good shape but I would install new ones as a matter of course.
19-tooth 2nd or "C" gear 67-3302
likewise in
EXCELLENT
condition,
NO
damage or visible wear on teeth, light polishing on the edge of engaging dogs,
NO
chipped or damaged dogs.
22-tooth 3rd or "E" gear 67-3305
also
EXCELLENT
,
NO
chipped or broken teeth,
NO
wear or pitting in case-hardened surfaces of teeth, low gear engaging dogs have similar light polishing,
NO
damaged dogs. Pressed-on
16-tooth 1st or "G" gear 67-3191
also
EXCELLENT
, - you almost always see rounded corners where the dogs engage in the recessed 3rd gear, but
NOT
on this one!
ALL
the corners and edges are clean & sharp, just like new! Kickstart ratchet parts are all included, pinion 67-3376 has normal wear from the kickstart quadrant, still very much serviceable as-is. 19-tooth 520 sprocket has light wear, gearbox sprocket nut also included, in LIKE NEW condition, with oil seal & cirlcip.
Layshaft 42-3094
(same part used in the other "T" needle-roller boxes including SC.T, TRI.T, SC.T2, DAY.T. RR.T & RR.T2) in
EXCELLENT
condition, straight, both needle-roller bearing journals flawless, good splines for sliding gears, speedometer drive gear 67-3088 shows
NO
wear or damage on teeth. Pressed-on
18-tooth 4th or "B" gear 42-3086
(also used in the RRT, RRT2, ARRT, ASCT & STBT boxes) in
GREAT
shape,
NO
pitting/wear marks in the case-hardened load-bearing surfaces of the teeth.
24-tooth 2nd or "D" gear 42-3024
also
EXCELLENT
, ditto for
21-tooth 3rd or "F" gear 67-3212
, almost looks new. No surprise at this point, but the
27-tooth 1st or "H" gear 42-3210
(unique to the SC.T and STD.T needle roller boxes) is also in
EXCELLENT
condtion,
NO
wear pitting or damage on the teeth, minimal wear in the holes for the 3rd gear engaging dogs, EN36 stamped on the front face.
In short, I don't think you will EVER find a better used Scramblers gear cluster - ever!!!
Shift selector shaft and both selector forks all in
VERY GOOD
condition, selector shaft grub screw 67-3117 missing, along with one or two of the outer cover screws, but these are no problem to source.
Replace the bearings, reassemble with fresh seals & gaskets, add oil and you are GOOD TO GO!
ALL in ALL a very good very close to
EXCELLENT
